Two-time winner Daniel Wyss set a new record for the 857.60 Race Across the West, finishing in a time 2 days and 29 minutes. Remarkable in itself. But considering that he broke his left leg in a mountain bike crash back in November, that the subsequent three surgeries kept him off the bike until April, and that he STILL has a pin and six screws in his leg, his finish in nothing short of astonishing!
Wyss was emotional as his crew met him at the finish on the Fort Lewis College Campus above Durango. “So much has happened in these months,” a crew member said.
Wyss’s bike sported a custom hand-made air-filled saddle. To make it firmer or softer just add or take out air. It has a Presta valve, of course.
It takes more than six screws and a metal rod to slow down Daniel Wyss
